What to do if you record some music from your CD but don’t hear any sound on playback?

This is caused by the way your machine is setup and is not technically a problem with the Transkriber software.

What is happening is that your machine is not sending sound from the CD player to the recording mechanism.

This situation is very easily fixed.

1. Bring up the volume control by start->program->accessories->multimedia-control. (On Windows 98, this is start->program->accessories->entertainment->volume)

2. Go to options->properties .

3. Under "Adjust volume for", click on "Recording".

4. Then click on "ok".

5. Notice that we now see the recording control. This is a mixer for the various devices on your machine that can be recorded from. In general, you only need the "CD" selected if you are recording from CD, the "Microphone" if from the microphone, etc. Leaving unneeded ones selected may cause that other device to be recorded. For example, if you have a microphone hooked up to your computer, then the microphone will record your CD player playing through the multimedia speakers (which will sound pretty horrible I assure you).

MIDI will record from the audio of your midi device, CD from your CD player, Line-in from the audio inputs of your sound card and Microphone from you microphone.

So the best thing to do is to leave only the "CD" player selected unless you don’t have the other devices hooked up are can be sure they won’t be active while you are recording from the transcriber.

If you do want to record from the audio input of your soundcard or from your microphone, then select those devices instead.

I press play on the CD recorder and get a message the "This program has performed an illegal operation".

This happens on some machines when you have another application currently playing the CD.

The most common cause is when your computer is configured so that the CD automatically begins playing when it is inserted.

If this is the case, you must either:

  1. Shutdown the other application.
  2. Use the other application to control playing of the CD and use the "record" button on the Transkriber main screen to actually begin recording.

In a future release, we will give a warning message to this effect.

I hear the voices in the room when I recorded audio.

This is caused by the "microphone" being enabled for recording on your system. Follow the instructions in the faq for when you record and no audio is heard. When you get to the recording panel, disable recording from the microphone.

When I insert a CD into my CDROM drive, Windows immediately starts playing the CD. How do I turn off this feature?

Answer
